Hi all, as you know KAREN is now live. We terminated the first connections on 17th December and now have seven Active members peering via IPv4, and one who is also peering via IPv6. Currently connected members are:
There is still work to do on IP6, routes and peering, but national and international IP4 unicast and multicast routes are available to members. We should still expect the occasional issue however as KAREN routing policies are tuned. If you are experiencing reachability or stability issues we ask you to please log a call with the KAREN helpdesk on 0508 466466 rather than communicate with engineers directly. This will assist us to track problems.
Currently there are no DNS services within KAREN, until they go live it is suggested that R&E network names be resolved from Caltech’s DNS, ns1.ultralight.org 192.84.86.88
If you are applying to APNIC for a new AS number in order to be able to connect to KAREN please note that from 1st January 2007 APNIC will be assigning 32 bit ASN’s (AS numbers in the range 65,536 – 4,294,967,295) by default, this range is as yet untested within KAREN and may cause issues with specific vendors BGP implementations. To avoid these issues we advise you to specifically request a 16 bit ASN which are still available.
As time goes by we will be adding further functionality, tools and documents to the technical section of the website. The first phase will include white papers on REANNZ experience of setting up a KAREN connection, sample configurations, various on net tools and additional network Weathermap functions http://erg.wand.net.nz/weathermap/weathermap.php
