REANNZ Internet
REANNZ Internet gives our members access to the entire Internet at a substantially lower cost than other suppliers can offer.
Overview
REANNZ Internet enables our members to access all internet routes via their REANNZ network connection, for an additional cost (see below).
REANNZ's network normally provides members with access to approximately 13,000 Research and Education routes. Like any home internet service provider, REANNZ Internet provides access to destinations not on that Research and Education network.
It is provided via SNAP, and makes use the REANNZ's network infrastructure. The service is designed to ensure that our network’s white space is preserved so that the advanced nature of the network is protected. (Our Resource Allocation Policy PDF provides a framework for how network capacity will be managed.)
Why you should buy REANNZ Internet?
As expected, the market has reacted to our deal and other providers are now dropping their prices to match the REANNZ Internet price.
While REANNZ is content to play the role of market maker and drive down pricing for the entire community, we can have an even larger impact on the market if members pull together and purchase at least some portion of their global Internet connectivity through REANNZ. That way more of the community's money can stay in the community and be reinvested in delivering additional services, and not in the coffers of the telecommunications providers.
Other than the fantastic price, other benefits are:
- Aggressive market intervention to drive down costs
- Price reviews every 6 months
- Simpler connectivity - one connection all that is required
- Single physical circuit for the REANNZ network, services and the Internet
- Contracts to length of master agreement
- Simpler administration - a single REANNZ and commodity Internet invoice
- Surplus remains in community to benefit community
- You are only paying for international traffic, national traffic is "free"
What Others are Saying about REANNZ Internet
The feedback we’ve received has been very positive, both from those who helped us set up and trial the service, and from those who have bought into the production service.
Glen Eustace, Infrastructure Development Engineer from Massey University sums it up: “With the move to REANNZ Internet, we have nearly doubled our capacity at a significantly lower cost. It is early days yet as we await the arrival of our internal student body but we believe the new service will be appreciated by all.
“Even considering we were a guinea pig, the migration was uneventful. A few days preparation at both end and a phone call on the day and it was all done.”
Richard Waldin, Information Manager at Scion, agrees: “The transition to the new KAREN-delivered internet service was very successful. The help we received from REANNZ was invaluable, they ensured that the planning and cutover was a success. It took very little effort on our part and our users have had no disruption to services.
“We have reduced our internet costs by at least 60% and we have more capacity and a more resilient service.”
Bevan Macnaughton, Intranet Manager of Southland Girls High School has this to say: "With the benefits of fast national and some international routes available on the REANNZ network, alongside affordable international data rates without the worries of data caps, REANNZ Internet has proven to be a fast and effective for our use."
