Yesterday NIWA announced its buying one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers for use in environmental forecasting.
The new IBM Power 575 supercomputer and supporting infrastructure will cost $12.7 million, and is one of the biggest single investments in science in New Zealand.
NIWA’s new supercomputer will be the most powerful climate research supercomputer in the Southern Hemisphere, and will be used to investigate some of the most complex problems in energy, aerospace, weather and climate modelling fields. The supercomputer will be located at NIWA's Wellington site in Evans Bay.
The supercomputer will be available to scientists throughout New Zealand through KAREN. This means the whole science community in New Zealand will be able to benefit from this investment. Once you're set up a user of the supercomputer, you can submit jobs and receive the results back at a speed and quality as if you were on site at Evans Bay.
This investment adds to the overall capacity and capability of high performance computing in New Zealand, and complements other high performance computing resources, such as the BlueFern facility at the University of Canterbury.
