KAREN2 Architecture Plan released
KAREN2 is the project to develop the next version of KAREN beginning in late 2013. It is designed to position KAREN as a long-term infrastructure-based network capable of meeting the needs of the community over a 20-year period at a significantly lower cost per unit bandwidth.
The demand for capacity on KAREN is predicted to grow at close to 100% per annum, which means that by 2014, KAREN’s 10Gb/s capacity would be reaching its limit. We also need to plan how to make the best use of the new 40 Gb/s International capacity scheduled to come on stream in mid-2014.
To continue to deliver the level of service the members expect, KAREN has to grow in both capacity and capability while at the same time dramatically reducing the per-unit cost of bandwidth provided.
The KAREN2 Architecture Plan is one of the first steps towards achieving this goal. You can find the document, in PDF format, in the KAREN2 project section of the REANNZ website, on the Project Considerations page.
