TelstraClear has launched an innovative new service trial over KAREN – free-to-air TV and radio multicast streaming. This valuable IPTV service is available only to KAREN members (and only for those who have implemented multicasting).
You can watch live events, news footage and great kiwi shows from your desktop. For example, on Monday 8 December, the REANNZ team were able to watch the live opening of Parliament in high quality in our office.
This trial service showcases the benefits of multicast. Multicasting allows for a much more efficient use of network bandwidth than unicasting (traditionally how streaming content is watched on networks) and will be an important part of the delivery of any live TV service over the internet (or private IP networks).
The service streams TV feeds uncompressed at 6.5Mb/s in MPEG video. Multicasting streaming at this rate is only possible over KAREN’s advanced architecture. Some High Definition content is also available.
TelstraClear are seeking feedback from participants on the value of the service for educational purposes and are offering to broadcast your content too. If you have 2+ hours of your own content of benefit to members contact the IPTV team at TelstraClear.
