KAREN Identity and Access Management Workshops

The Advanced Network Capability Build Fund is supporting two workshops, one in Auckland on Monday 5th November and the other in Christchurch on Tuesday 6th of November, to assist members of the KAREN community to prepare their identity and access management infrastructure for membership of IT trust federations. The workshops are free to attend and funding is available from the Capability Build Fund to provide travel assistance for up to two attendees from each organisation.

We are privileged to have Professor James Dalziel from Macquarie University, the leader of the Meta Access Management system (MAMS - https://mams.melcoe.mq.edu.au/zope/mams) project, to lead the workshops. James is a well known and excellent speaker, with a wealth of knowledge of identity and access management.

The workshops will cover:

  • What identity and access management (IAM) entails
  • IT trust federation
  • Shibboleth and related technologies
  • PKI certificates and their use
  • OpenId and Identity 2.0
  • The Australian Access Federation (AAF)
  • Plans for IAM in the New Zealand R&E community

The workshops will also provide an opportunity, through facilitated discussions, to do a stock take of IAM across the KAREN community, and help plan a path to IT trust federation capability for the community. Attendees will be sent a list of questions before the workshop so they can be well prepared to respond on behalf of their organisation. Folllowing the workshops a report will be written detailing the state of IAM preparedness across the KAREN user community, and providing recommendations for the steps necessary to progress towards readiness for IT trust federation.

The workshops will commence at 10am and finish by 4pm to allow ample time for travel.

It is expected that those with the responsibility for identity and access management will be the primary attendees of the workshops, and Directors of IT/CIOs will also find the workshops useful in positioning their organisations to move forward towards an ability to join IT trust federations.

Venues in each city will be advised shortly. For more information contact Neil James, neil.james@stonebow.otago.ac.nz, Project Manager, KAREN IAM Workshops.
