Semantic Data Modelling RFP

Julie Watson @ MoRST, 27/04/2009 9:52am

MoRST is seeking proposals for a semantic data modelling project.

About data modelling

eResearch relies on the concept of sharing and re-using data. In theory access to databases for re-use has merit but in practice there are few scientific databases that are set up to allow re-use because of a lack of inherent meaning captured within them. Essentially most existing datasets will not have been designed for interoperability or will have been up-graded overtime making it impossible to make historical comparisons between versions.

Semantic data model fund

This proposal is for a pilot project to enriching a selected database with semantics to enhance interoperability by including more self-description. In an eResearch framework, tools like database enriching semantics are part of the middleware suite as it builds out toward data re-use.

This project would allow nationally coordinated GRID middleware services to be tested using a real-life database, it will also provide a benchmark for promoting databases which are consistent and shareable, and the benefits of drastically reduced costs of development through data modelling.

Proposals are due to Julie Watson at MoRST by Thursday 14 May 2009.
