Travel and Event Fund
Purpose
The purpose of this fund is to support Members' attendance at national and international events, the visiting of international experts and costs for Member-held events to raise capability in advanced networking, eResearch and eEducation.
The fund supports collaboration and the sharing of expertise and ideas between organisations and countries.
Criteria
Applications will be assessed against their ability to:
- encourage new or enhanced collaborations
- build professional skills and expertise in advanced networking tools and techniques
- increase the use of KAREN
- benefit the wider research and education community in New Zealand
- match one or more priorities detailed in the Advanced Network Capability Building Roadmap:
- Supporting adoption and implementation of real –time collaboration technologies for teaching and research
- Supporting the adoption and implementation of middleware – specifically enabling sharing of data and/or information or computational resources, scientific equipment or facilitates national or international collaboration
- Coordination of standards-based novel methods of data collection and analysis, e.g. tele-instrumentation, visualisation and simulation, data and text mining
Eligibility
- Applications must be led by KAREN's core Members (New Zealand's universities and crown research institutes)
- Retrospective applications will not be accepted
- Co-funding is strongly encouraged
Process
The travel and event fund is open for applications on an ongoing basis.
Review the vision and goals of the fund and how to achieve these goals. Your application must be aligned to these goals.

Institutional Capability Build Fund

The purpose this fund is to accelerate our members’ institutional capability to exploit KAREN’s full value. $50,000 per member institution is available to support staff time investment in KAREN capability development and awareness raising activities. This fund has supported the appointment of a KAREN Champion within each core member institution.
KAREN Champions will be sharing their ideas and experiences the KAREN wiki.

The Capability Build Project Fund supports projects that build capability and awareness of KAREN. The priorities for the second round of the fund were:
- Supporting adoption and implementation of real –time collaboration technologies for teaching and research
- Supporting the adoption and implementation of middleware – specifically enabling sharing of data and/or information or computational resources, scientific equipment or facilitates national or international collaboration
