$1.6m awarded for KAREN-enabled research and education

KAREN project fund recipients announced

5 projects will receive total funding of $785,000 from the Capability Build Project Fund. The successful projects take full advantage of KAREN's capabilities, and will accelerate collaboration, skill development, and the use of KAREN.

The successful applicants are:

  • An AgResearch project that will allow researchers from New Zealand and around the world to use their specialised electron microscopes remotely
  • A project led by Crop and Food that will allow the real-time remote identification of invasive pests and diseases for biosecurity
  • A University of Canterbury led project that will establish 3 working PlanetLab nodes in New Zealand, allowing New Zealand researchers to participate via KAREN in a global research network which is used to develop and study new technologies
  • A GNS project that will enable researchers and educators around the world to access and interpret New Zealand’s seismographic data with unprecedented speed and volume
  • A project that will use KAREN as part of a Scion educational programme, Forests of life

We're pleased to announce that all applications to the Institutional Capability Build Fund have been accepted, making $50,000 available to each core KAREN Member to accelerate institutional capability to exploit KAREN’s full value.

We look forward to engaging with you and your KAREN Champion as you implement your plans to accelerate awareness of KAREN and capability development.

Funding for travel and events up for grabs

The Travel and Event Fund is open for applications to support your attendance at national and international events, the visiting of international experts and costs for Member-held events to raise capability in advanced networking, eResearch and eEducation.

The Capability Build Fund is provided by the New Zealand Government through the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology.
