KAREN e-posters for APAN26

Students at New Zealand tertiary education institutions are invited to send us an e-poster (multimedia presentation) showcasing innovative use of KAREN. The e-posters can showcase a real project or just innovative ideas for using KAREN.

The deadline for entries is 30 June May 2008. 


The spoils

Prizes up for grabs are:

  • Cash prizes to the top 3 presentations ($1,500 for first prize, $1,000 for second prize, and $750 for third prize) (provided by InternetNZ)
  • Free conference registration (provided by InternetNZ) and support for travel and accommodation for the four finalists (provided by Endace)

Getting in theme

You are encouraged to create an e-Poster that reflects the theme of APAN26: environmental, regional and operational sustainability.

Here’s a few possible practical applications of the themes to help you get started:

Environmental sustainability

  • Travelling less
  • Avoiding resource duplication
  • Substituting ‘bits for carbon’

Regional sustainability

  • Bringing local assets to the world
  • Accessing the best of the world from the locality
  • Location independence

Operational sustainability

  • Sharing expertise
  • New fibre economics
  • High bandwidth – low cost approaches
  • Integration with local and international partners

Eligibility

  • Students must be currently enrolled with a tertiary education institution in New Zealand
  • The presentation may be produced by individuals or teams, however only one person per entry will be invited to attend the APAN26 Sustainable Networking conference
  • Finalists must attend the conference to accept the prize

Content guidelines

To be accepted, entries must:

  • be clear to both an academic and a member of the public
  • have use of KAREN and its unique capabilities as a central factor
  • outline the problem, issue or activity
  • discuss the methodology
  • discuss the conclusions and relevance of the work for sustainability (see above)

Materials and presentation guidelines

  • Presenters are encouraged to use graphics, images, video, or any other media, including text
  • Final judging will take into account clear communication as well as research and education excellence
  • Your presentation should be able to be experienced in less than 5 minutes
